Island Floral Bigz Die Flower

Since my Sneak Peek Week post featuring all of that island-themed product, I’ve had several inquiries regarding how to create the Pumpkin Pie flower using the Island Floral Bigz Die from the Summer Mini. So I’ve created a quick little tutorial to share how I made that fun flower. For those of you who aren’t demos and don’t yet have this die, just bookmark this post for your reference later should you purchase that die! Or try this out using a smaller 5-petal flower die cut or punch if you have one.

For this project, you will need:
Paper: One sheet of cardstock in the color that you want your flower to be, and two 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ pieces of a green cardstock for the leaves
Tools: Island Floral Bigz Die (2010 Summer Mini), Big Shot Die Cutting Machine, Standard Cutting Pads, Paper Snips, Paper Piercing Tool, Sticky Strip, yarn or some fairly thick string

Step 1
Using your Big Shot machine, standard cutting pads, and the Island Floral Bigz Die, cut out five of the 5-petal flower and 2 of the leaves

Step 2
Cut a piece of yarn approximately 8″ long. Tie a knot at one end of the piece of yarn, then string it through the hole in the center of one of the flowers. Use paper snips to trim off excess yarn at the knot. Leave the long end of the yarn hanging.

Step 3
Fold the flower at each point where the petals meet through to the center of the flower, like shown below. Folds can go in random directions.

Step 4
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with three more of the flowers

Step 5
Now, with the four flowers you have stringed, string the long end of yarn through the hole in the remaining flower.

Step 6
Once you have threaded all the strings through the one flower, pull the strings taught. Adjust each individual flower until you have achieved the desired look by rotating the flowers or changing the direction of the folds.

Step 7
Secure the strings in the back of the flower by tying a knot or using some sticky strip. Try to keep the strings pulled as taught as possible.

Step 8
Using the paper piercing tool, curl the tips of the leaves. Then use sticky strip to adhere the leaves to the flower. Alternatively, you can punch a hole each leaf and thread your strings through the leaves as well before securing.

Now you have a fun and three dimensional flower!

Make the flowers in any color you desire! I used the soon to return In Color Riding Hood Red and it looks fabulous! Use these flowers to decorate a table, or string them together to make a fun paper lei! The possibilities are plenty with this fabulous die cut flower!

These are really neat flowers. I love going to the Stamping Showcase (I think that’s what it’s called) on Stampin’ Connection. I find the most wonderful projects. Saw a really neat card with tulips using this die and had to see if someone could top that one – you did! :) )))) Thanks for blessing my day (and many of my days on SC.
