In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, which is less than a week away, I’ve decided to go a little Irish on you with today’s post. The title of this post is Gaelic (Irish) for “Long life to you”. Fun, huh? Don’t ask me how to pronounce it, though, because I have NO idea…haha.

Anyways, for today’s St. Patty’s Day themed project, I want to share with you something I created yesterday for the craft fair this weekend.

I’ve seen these fun decorated mint patty candies here and there and I knew that I wanted to have some on hand for the craft fair just as an inexpensive treat for people to buy. I was inspired to create some St. Patrick’s Day patties since the holiday will be just a few days after the fair. Sadly, I have no St. Patrick’s Day stamps at all, so I was challenged to create something using only what I have on hand. So I whipped out my punches and was able to create these fun shamrock and leprechaun hat decorations for my mint patties.

Don’t you just love them? They are so fun and were actually really easy to make. And since I haven’t had the chance to put together a Webbie Workshop Week for this month, I decided to at least share a step by step tutorial on how to create these cuties just in time for St. Patrick’s Day! So read on and make some of these St. Patty’s Day patties yourself!

For this project, you will need:
Paper: Garden Green – just have around a half sheet on hand since you’ll be using this color a lot, Whisper White – 1 piece approx 4″ x 4″, Basic Black – 1 strip 1 1/8″ x 2″, Crushed Curry – 1 1/2″ x 2″
Tools: Round Tab Punch, Scallop Circle Punch, 1 3/4″ Circle Punch, 1 1/4″ Circle Punch, Heart to Heart Punch OR Small Heart Punch, Glue or Snail Adhesive
Extras: Basic Black Stampin’ Write Marker

Step 1
Let’s start by making the leprechaun hat. Use the Round Tab Punch to punch out a piece of Garden Green cardstock. Cut the tab in half so it looks like below.

Step 2
Next, cut a 1″ x 1 1/8″ piece from the Garden Green sheet. Place this small piece in your 1 3/4″ Circle Punch like below, just enough so that the bottom edge gets cut off.

When you’ve punched this small piece of green cardstock, you should have two pieces like below. Make sure to hold onto that little scrap that you punched off the green piece as this will serve as the stem for your shamrock later on.

Step 3
Adhere the small green cardstock piece you just punched to the top of the Garden Green tab, so it looks like below.

Step4
Now, take your Basic Black strip and use your 1 3/4″ Circle Punch to punch off one end, like so.

Step 5
Place the strip of Basic Black back into your 1 3/4″ Circle punch, like shown below, to punch out a curved strip of cardstock.

You should now have a piece of Basic Black cardstock that looks like below. Just estimate how thick you want this strip to be.

Step 6
Adhere this black strip you just punched out to the hat, like shown below. You will want to place it so that it covers the bottom edge of the Garden Green piece that was adhered to the tab piece. There may be some trial and error to get the right thickness so that this black band covers the bottom edge of the Garden Green piece that was glued to the tab piece.

Step 7
Now take the Crushed Curry strip and punch off one end using the 1 3/4″ Circle punch

Step 8
Just like with the Basic Black strip, place the Crushed Curry strip back into the 1 3/4″ Circle punch, as shown, to punch out a curved strip.

You should now have a strip of Crushed Curry that looks like this. You’ll want this strip to be thicker than your black strip. Again, this might take a little trial and error before you get it to the right thickness.

Step 9
Cut off a small piece of the Curry Strip and adhere it to your leprechaun hat, over part of the black band. This creates a nice little buckle for the hat.

Step 10
For the final touch, use your Basic Black Stampin’ Write Marker to draw a curved line at the top of hat, to give it some dimension. Your leprechaun hat is now complete!

Step 11
For the Shamrock, take that small piece of Garden Green cardstock that you cut off with your punch earlier and cut it in half. Then punch out a circle of Whisper White cardstock using your 1 1/4″ Circle punch. Glue your shamrock stem to the bottom center of the white circle so it looks like below.

Step 12
Punch out three small hearts from your Garden Green cardstock. Adhere the hearts to your white circle so it looks like a shamrock. Make sure that you cover the top part of your stem. It should look below. A beautiful green shamrock! Add a fourth heart if you want your shamrock to be lucky!

Step 13
To finish off decorating my St. Patty’s Day patties, I designed them as follows. For the leprechaun hat patties, I adhered the leprechaun hat to a Whisper White scallop circle, which was layered on top of a Garden Green scallop circle. This was adhered to the top of a mint patty using snail adhesive. The bottom of the patty was covered with a second Garden Green scallop circle. For the shamrock patties, I adhered my shamrock circle onto a Garden Green scallop circle. This was adhered to the top of the mint patty. The bottom was covered with a Whisper White scallop circle.

There you go, my crafting friends! Now you can make your very own St. Patty’s Day Patties! And you still have plenty of time left before St. Patrick’s Day! Yay! I hope you have fun making these fun treats for your friends and family!

Well, it’s time for me to get back to preparing for this craft fair! It’s in only two days! I can’t wait!
